Connecticut Coastal Towns Nearshore Model Storm Surge and Wave Height Dataset

Brief Description | Dataset Content | Temporal Coverage | Spatial Coverage | Update Schedule | Usage Restrictions | Detailed Description | Documentation | Related File Naming & Structure Information | Download | Citation | Contact | Disclaimer

Brief Description:

The FUNWAVE TVD model outputs of Super Storm Sandy and 1% annual exceedance probability (AEP) storm scenario for Branford, Norwalk, and New Haven, CT. This dataset contains the wave height, water elevation during the stated storms at a finer resolution considering the complex nearshore dynamic on the shore.

Dataset Content:

The dataset includes FUNWAVE model outputs of 1% AEP (or 100-year) and Super Storm Sandy scenarios for coastal multiple towns in finer resolution. Each file contains surface water elevation (eta) and significant wave height (Hsig) for the corresponding model run. Also included are coordinates of the model grid (x, y in meters, and latitude and longitude) and model bathymetry. The time interval is 50s for eta and 100s for Hsig.

Temporal Coverage:

The model duration for each run is 2 hours in real-time. The time interval is 50s for surface water elevation and 100s for significant wave height.

Spatial Coverage:

The model domains are rectangular inside Branford, New Haven and Norwalk. The smallest grid resolution is 2 m on the shore.

Update Schedule:

• Recently updated on July 2021
• Next update: November 2021

Usage Restrictions:

None

Detailed Description:

The modeled regions uses FVCOM-SWAVE coupled model results as an output boundary condition and simulate the storms in a nearshore model run by FUNWAVE TVD to obtain onshore surface water elevation and significant wave height. The available scenarios are:

FUNWAVE_output_Branford_100.nc: output file for Branford 100-year scenario run
FUNWAVE_output_Norwalk_100.nc: output file for Norwalk 100-year scenario run
FUNWAVE_output_NewHaven_100.nc: output file for New Haven 100-year scenario run
FUNWAVE_output_Branford_Sandy.nc: output file for Branford Hurricane Sandy run
FUNWAVE_output_Norwalk_Sandy.nc: output file for Norwalk Hurricane Sandy run
FUNWAVE_output_NewHaven_Sandy.nc: output file for New Haven Hurricane Sandy run
FUNWAVE_output_Fairfield_100.nc: output file for Fairfield 100-year scenario run
FUNWAVE_output_Fairfield_10.nc: output file for Fairfield 10-year scenario run
FUNWAVE_output_Fairfield_10yr20in.nc: output file for Fairfield 10-year+20 inch sea level rise scenario run

How to access NetCDF data from THREDDS:
Thredds enables remote access of the NetCDF data, which can be accessed in MATLAB, Python, R, etc., via URLs. An example of accessing and plotting the model output data using Python is provided at https://nbviewer.jupyter.org/urls/github.uconn.edu/raw/gist/chl19041/9071044da8448986e7ddcae2df0fdb90/raw/d9f18a0d1692531b3aebffa358c4b9ef2d920a5a/LIS_opendap_example.ipynb
If you need to download the NetCDF files as a whole, you may use the nccopy command provided by the netcdf package. For example:

nccopy -4
